How to Remove People from Photos on iPhone

On a supported iPhone, the Photos Clean Up tool can remove distracting people or objects. Availability depends on the device, software, language and region. It is an Apple Intelligence feature, not a capability guaranteed on every iPhone. Apple Clean Up requirements.

The workflow was checked against Apple's guidance on October 7, 2026. Older software may show different controls.

Use the supported Photos workflow

Open the photo, enter editing and locate Clean Up. Apple's current iOS guide places it under Tools. Select the unwanted person by tapping, brushing or circling as appropriate, then inspect the replacement before saving. Apple photo cleanup guide.

If the control is missing, check the official requirements rather than assuming the app is broken. A supported device can still have region or language restrictions. Use an available external editor or another photograph when the built-in route is unavailable.

Choose an image the edit can handle

Removal is easier when the person is small and the surrounding background has a clear continuation. A person against a plain wall is different from a person covering a sign, another face or a complex railing.

The hidden background was not recorded in the covered area. A cleanup result estimates a replacement; it does not reveal a verified scene behind the person.

Worked example: a passerby behind a subject

Remove the passerby in one controlled selection while keeping the main subject outside it. Inspect the wall or path where the person stood. Look for repeated patches, broken lines and a remaining shadow.

If the passerby overlaps the main subject's hand or clothing, compare the reconstructed edge with the original. A plausible replacement may still change the main subject. Use a different frame if the edit cannot preserve the important feature.

Review at three scales

ViewCheck
Whole imageIs the composition improved?
Normal sizeDoes the repaired background look coherent?
Close cropAre edges, shadows and repeated textures believable?

If the person was reflected in glass or cast a visible shadow, decide whether those traces need a separate edit. Do not expand one selection so broadly that it damages unrelated content.

Keep the purpose clear

For a personal creative image, removal may simplify the frame. For documentary or evidentiary use, an edited image changes the recorded scene. Preserve the original and describe consequential changes appropriately.

Use Cuta's image workspace for an available cleanup or creative reconstruction workflow, then compare it against the original. Choose the result for its actual quality rather than assuming that a missing person means a completed edit.

Judge the repaired background, not only the missing person

A person standing against a plain wall is a different removal task from a person covering a fence or another face. After using a supported removal feature, inspect the place where the person stood for repeated patches, bent lines and invented parts of nearby objects. A convincing small preview can conceal those errors.

Keep the untouched photograph and identify the edited copy. If the unwanted person overlaps important factual detail, choose another source or a crop when possible. Device and feature availability must match the official requirements linked in the guide; the presence of an editing button on a different phone is not evidence that every iPhone supports the same workflow.
